Henry Flaig, Jr.
PSE&G’s first solar loan customer
Solar power provides affordable, clean energy, but steep installation expenses can deter many
interested customers. By providing affordable financing, PSE&G’s Solar Loan program is helping
residential and commercial customers overcome that hurdle. PSE&G’s first solar loan customer, Henry
J. Flaig, Jr., now enjoys lower utility bills and knows that he’s helping fight climate change.
Here Henry shares details about his decision to “go green” with solar.
What role did the PSE&G Solar Loan Program play in your decision to install solar
panels?
I probably would not have installed solar panels in the foreseeable future if not for the PSE&G
solar loan program. I heard about the program from a member of my congregation. We asked our
pastor
to attend a seminar held by PSE&G at a local hotel. After reviewing all the material she brought
back, I knew I wanted to do this. I immediately applied as soon as the residential program was
available.
How did PSE&G work with you through the loan application and installation
process?
It was a long process, a full-fledged loan application like a mortgage. I already had my
installer selected and had done all my homework. At each step of the way, PSE&G and I worked
together. They were very cooperative and their contacts were extremely helpful. They held my hand
through the whole process.
How will the solar panels affect your energy budget?
My neighbors are all asking the same question! My installation includes 27 panels which can
generate over 5,000 kilowatt hours per year. Because the panels were installed in the winter, when
the sun is low in the sky, I haven’t experienced their full benefit yet. Currently, I use 11,000
kilowatt hours per year. I should be able to cut my electric bill by about 60 to 70 percent. I
will definitely have a better idea after a full year of use.
Why was it important to you to switch to renewable energy?
I’m concerned about global warming and want to do green things. It’s a concern we need to have
for our future. The more we can get away from fossil fuels, the better off we’ll all be -- not
only you and me, but also our children and grandchildren. It’s for the future of our
planet.
